Passionate Journey: The Grice Collection of Native American Art
Mint Museum of Art (Charlotte N.C.) and Dorie Reents-Budet (2009). Passionate Journey: The Grice Collection of Native American Art. Charlotte, N.C., Mint Museum of Art. in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, N.C., July 18-Oct. 18, 2009
This is a catalog of a remarkable exhibition held at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, NC in 2009. The exhibition featured the collection of Native American art amassed by Gretchen and Nelson Grice. Instead of collecting random "representative" objects from all over, the collection features four distinct media. This allows each media and region to be featured more comprehensively and gives coherence to each section. Each section is accompanied by expert interpretation. The opening section features fabulous contemporary Maya textiles from Guatemala. Those are primarily vibrant woven and embroidered items of clothing. The second section features a collection of powerful masks from distinct parts of Mexico. The third section is devoted to the high-quality ceramic art of the Pueblo of New Mexico. This treasure of a book concludes with a section on Native American basketry from the Tlingit in the north to the Tarahumara of Mexico. While a short section, the basketry pieces are stunning.
