Mickalene Thomas used a 35mm disposable camera to capture a series of photographs that inspired Maya No. 10. The photos feature Maya, her muse and former lover, taken in their Brooklyn home and basement studio on Lexington Avenue. Portrait of Maya #10 reflects Thomas’s vision of feminine beauty and empowerment, exuding sensuality, elegance, and allure. The artwork explores and challenges conventional ideas surrounding gender, race, sexuality, and femininity, offering a nuanced and thought-provoking perspective on these themes.
