Aft. 1730s, penniless Elizabeth Blackwell (1699–c. 1758) created a unique plan for financial success: a guide to medicinal plants, incl. New World species. Her Curious Herbal (1737-39) achieved success & her 500 colorful plates were praised by doctors & apothecaries. This modern edition features unaffected descriptions & an unknown preface. Introductory texts by McDowell & Stiles Tyson shed light on Blackwell, her art & botanical knowledge of her time.
