MINT MUSEUM OF ART

John Walter Lenox and American Belleek

$49.95

Immigrants from Ireland, comprising one third of the U.S. refugee population, settled in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. A few of these craftsmen found employment at the notable Trenton, N.J.-based ceramics firm, Ott, and Brewer, who in the 1880s created their own version of the popular Belleek porcelain. The widespread success of Belleek, which had originated at David McBirney's factory in Northern Ireland in the mid-19th century, inspired numerous American imitations, praised for its exquisite hue by the press. The Mint Museum in Charlotte is hosting Walter Scott Lenox and American Belleeck, the first exhibition to highlight the early days of Belleek manufacture in America and the impact of Walter Scott Lenox. Curated by Senior Curator of Decorative Arts, Brian Gallagher, the exhibition features the Mint's collection plus loans from institutions and private collections throughout the U.S.
