Black American Portraits chronicles the use of portraiture from 1800 to the present to represent Black Americans. Curated by David C. Driskell at LACMA, this selection of 140 works showcases emancipation, the Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights and Black Power eras, multiculturalism, and Black Lives Matter. It offers a counter to the misrepresentation of Blackness and emphasizes love, abundance, family, and exuberance. Featuring art from African descent and other backgrounds, the works span multiple mediums, including painting, drawing, prints, photography, sculpture, mixed media and time-based media. Artists include Alvin Baltrop, Edward Biberman, Bisa Butler, Jordan Casteel, and more.
