Originally a glassmaker, he has expanded to painting, collage, printmaking, quilting, and most recently, basketweaving. Pemberton explores his African ancestry, his American heritage, and the many other influences he has experienced through his life, all the while aware that he is part of a legacy of makers. He creates a cultural hybridity uniquely his; each object layers technique, pattern, image, and allusions atop each other to create portraits, often of people, sometimes of traditions, alongside the exploration of the Black experience in the United States. As Pemberton observes, “I work with people who are close to me, with people who I don’t see represented as much in art history, whether it’s because of the color of their skin or their gender expression or their socioeconomic background or some intersection of underrepresented identities. And my life is full of those people.”

This is the first exhibition catalogue dedicated to his work.
